Caterpillars and Butterflies!

In our classroom I ordered caterpillars for my class to watch them grow and transform into butterflies! It was an awesome experience and the class loved every second of it!  Everyday they wrote in their caterpillar journals and drew what they saw!

Of course we had to read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle! We even made our own very Hungry caterpillars!

I had the students write about what they would do if they were a very hungry caterpillar.

Next, we used a version of Eric Carle's painting to make beautiful butterflies!

I gave students a large sheet of oak tag with the outline of a butterfly on the back. Students experimented with mixing colors, making new colors, and using different textures to paint the paper.

When the paintings were dry, the kids turned over their paintings and cut out their beautiful butterflies! I even gave them foam stickers to decorate!

What a fun activity!

To make it even better we had a butterfly release party and invited the parents to watch us release our live butterflies!

This was an experience no one will forget!! :)
